Malala Yousafzai gets compared to Lebanese porn star by Twitter trolls

Women’s education campaigner and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai gets targeted by online trolls for her outfit whilst attending lectures at Oxford University.

The image of her in skinny jeans and heels was republished by The Indian Press and distributed widely on Facebook and Twitter earlier last week.

Although the picture showed her wearing her dupatta (head covering), comments on the photo shamed her choice of outfit for it’s ‘Western’ approach. Other comments compared her to Lebanese-American porn star Mia Khalifa, who has been criticised for bringing shame to Lebanon.

But many online commentators came to defend her – including Pakistani political Bushra Gohrar who tweeted: “Our Malala Yousafzai looks great in jeans. Can’t understand why her choice of clothes is a problem for some.”

Others who hit back at her trolls was BBC presenter Anita Anand, who told The Daily Mail: “Malala can wear whatever she likes as far as I’m concerned. The baying criticism is coming from the most regressive quarters, and I doubt she could do anything to please them. I sincerely hope she never tries. She is a heroine and a role model.”

Yousafzai started Oxford University earlier this month to study the renowned PPE degree – Politics, Philosophy and Economics – after being shot in the head by the Taliban back in 2012 for campaigning for women’s education. On her first day at Oxford she tweeted:

That Yousafzai has garnered more public attention for what she chooses to wear than her intellectual pursuits is another frustrating example of women’s achievements being overshadowed by an obsession with their bodies.
